How can I do banking between the US and the Philippines?

I want to visit the PI for several months. Obviously, I don't want to take a large amount of $ with me. I don't have anyone who could wire me money from the US. Can a person open a bank account in the PI with a tourist visa? If that were the case I could arrange to have transfers made from my bank here. I've traveled before outside the country and used my VISA ATM card. However, this can result in problems ie time limits, draw limits and other bothersome things. Anyone have any reliable information about this?

Regards,

Citibank is in the Philippines, in case you have an account with that American bank.

Otherwise, check if your bank is on the CIRRUS atm system. CIRRUS is prevalent in the Philippines.

Suggest you click on the link below and submit an on-line inquiry. Metrobank is one of the top 10 banks in the Philippines.

Have a nice day !
Hongkong and Shanghai Bank (HSBC) international banking services has what you are looking for.
I would use citi bank.
traveler's checks should be more convenient for you.
Try opening an account with Citibank Savings account...I think they would allow you to open an account with them since in their application form they have a space their for US citizens to input their social security number. And should you decide to go back to the states and come back here. You can maintain the account since they have no maintaining balance, however you should be aware of any dormancy fee that you could incur should you not be returning to the Philippines for 1 year.

Please inquiry with Citibank in your state for any extra documents that their local counterpart should require. Also ask if referral would be required since some bank won't open you an account without referrals from a client of their bank.

Should you decide to have monthly money wire transfered. Ask your bank if you can sign an agreement with them that allows them to wire some money to a specific account at specific dates. Cause in the Philippines, you could arrange that with you bank.
First get a list of the most convenient banks in the area you plan to stay in the Philippines. Visit the branch and inquire about the requirements needed to open a deposit account.

For the banks you qualify for, do some research on their branches or remittance centers they have available around your area in the U.S. Then inquire on the cost for sending international money transfers from U.S. to your Philippines deposit account.

For example, Phillippines National Bank (PNB), Metrobank, RCBC offer money transfers from the US to your deposit account in the Philippines for about $6 per transaction.

Before going to the Philippines, you can send money to your deposit account and when you arrive in the Philippines, withdraw any amount of your balance anytime you wish. All you usually need is your account deposit book to make the withdrawal and a valid form of identification.

Good luck!
My wife and I live in both the states and the Philippines equally. Out of the thirteen responses I have read, no one has address the ACR issue. Banks in the Philippines are required for foreigners to have an ACR. it takes on an average of six months to obtain an ACR. Because of the many inconsitent practices in the Philippines, because different people, interrupt the rules differently it is possible to open an account without an ACR.

The best way top open an account in the Philippines is to first narrow down a list of banks located in your area of interest. Once you have figured out which bank works for you, establish contacts with other people who have strong ties with bank. Bank managers make a habbit of knowing their foreign customers. Have your new friend introduce you to the bank manager and perhaps favors can be accomplished.

Example: You would like to business with Metrobank in your particular proovince and will never be in the Philippines long enough to obtain ACR. You have make friends with your fellow American, who knows the manager at the bank you would like to do business with. Your friend introduces you to bank manager. Some times its who you know that gets the ball rolling.
