I have had a problem with Yahoo Messenger the cause being an add on called ads optimiser - I have disabled the add on, will this cause a problem with the performance of my browser etc.

After I installed Yahoo Messenger, I went into Add/Remove Programs and removed all the bundled crap they included with it, and my browser works just fine.

The add-on shouldn't cause any problems when it's disabled but maybe you should just remove it completely instead of just disabling it.
