Unable to view attachment (JPG) after saved to harddrive?

2 year old HP desktop. Using XP SP2, IE 6 and AOL to connect to web then using Yahoo email. I save an image file, usually JPG format (i.e. picture.jpg) from Yahoo email, to the local harddrive. That works fine but when I try to view it using Windows Fax/Photo viewer or PhotoShop or even IE, it complains that the format is not an image file. I've opened the image in Notepad, expecting to see some legible header info (camera used, exposure settings, etc.) at least. Nothing but junk. I compared it with an image I'd copied from a CD and was able to view that info in Notepad.

I've copied pictures to the harddrive from a flash drive or CD and they work fine. Can view them w/o problem. Is there some background junk encoding I'm unaware of? (Thinking there is...) Or would there be some corrupt XP DLL or setting that got turned on/off that's messing up the file? Does it need an IE/AOL patch? I've never seen this before. PC has lots of space %26amp; ram. Thanks in advance!

Windows and some photo viewers are not able to view certain .jpg files for some reason. There is something about the manner in which they are generated it appears. I have had this trouble with photos taken with a old digital camera that while jpg, is not compatible with some of the newer photo viewers. You can use Piccasa2 from Google, or the older version of Vueprint and should view fine. To this day when "browsing" my computer's files with the regular Windows explorer some of my jpgs will not view either in preview or thumbnail mode, or in full mode. However those old jpgs all work fine in Vueprint, Finepix (Fujicam softwave) and also in Picassa2 from Google. Try one of those programs mentioned and should view, print, etc. just fine. I don't know the technicalities of all this, but suspect that it is similar to the "codec" problems with .mpg files in that some downloaded from the internet are not viewable without first getting the proper codec for them. Are still .mpgs, but just not across the board compatible. ???? Anyway, that is how I solved it for my computer. :-)

make sure the image has the ".jpg" or respective image tag at the end of the file. if it doenst, windows can't determine what kind of file it is and wont be able to open it properly.

-p
sometimes the .jpg is part of the file name! double check it's properties by right clicking on it and looking for the file type!

if it still fails try a different e-mail send it to a gmail account! and right click the image to save as!

make sure you have the file time selected on the save screen to jpg. or image.. if you leave it on ALL FILES then put at .jpg after the file name!
