How do I improve the runtime of my Java applets?

This question is specifically in regards to the online game Runescape, if anyone else is familiar with it. Basically, once I load the Java applet, it runs perfectly for about ten to fifteen minutes. Over time, however, the frame rate continually starts to decay, and after about thirty minutes, the game is nearly unplayable and I have to stop.

To fix this problem, I've tried:

Using other browsers (I run Firefox, but Netscape and IE give similar results)

Changing the quality of the banner ads that run across the top of the screen to "Low" (This improves it a tiny bit, but doesn't help the main problem)

Running a whole bunch of Windows maintenance tools that supposedly freed up memory (Similarly useless)

Deleting some stuff my computer was archiving like cookies from websites I visited five years ago (Did nothing)

Sacrificing babies to Dagon (Why not?)

I'm in the process of upgrading the RAM on my computer, which is a tad low anyway, but I'm not convinced this is the problem. Ideas?

It will probably help if you give the applet some more memory. There's a default limit (64MB, I believe) in place.

Go to control panel and double-click java to open the java control panel. Click on the java tab. Then click on view for the Applet runtime settings.

There might be more than one version of java here, you want the newest one most likely. In the blank textfield (box) at the end type something like:

-Xmx256m -Xms256m

That tells java to allocate more memory(256MB) for the applet. If the applet won't run anymore, just make the numbers lower. You can go higher if you like, but I think it has to be a multiple of 16 (256 =16 * 16)

You can also track memory usage by using the sun java console (usually an option in your browser menus). Go to the little window and press 'm' - this will tell you how much memory is unused by the program.

This may not be a permanent fix, you might just get to play longer before everything gets laggy.

That sounds like a bug with Java. Make sure you're running the latest version of Java for your system. The latest version is Java 6 update 3. Download it at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
